The Real Mavericks are Women. It wasn’t “the maverick” John McCain who went out and bloviated about bipartisanship and hating the process only to do exactly what Donald Trump wanted.
It wasn’t Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who will do anything for attention, or Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) who stood up against Trump’s wishes — confused though they may be.
It wasn’t Mr. Tea Party principles Rand Paul — who represents a state that would be hard hit by massive cuts to Medicaid. Rand Paul would appear to be all branding all the time. If you truly are standing on principle while voting exactly as you are told to vote 100% of the time, then the entire Republican Senate must be principled too.
Sens. Dean Heller voted blindly with his party and kept his mouth shut.
Who decided to think for themselves? It was two women. It was Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME) who stood up to the erratic, non-policy having, blabbering 45th President. Trump has shown zero grasp of knowing the details of any policy on any issue. Trump has been stunningly light on substance and basic knowledge of the way the federal government works. He’s also a serial liar, which the New York Times documented in a broadsheet full of falsehoods a few months ago.
He’s also a shockingly petty 70 year old man who traffics in bullying subordinates and engaging in public humiliation. Trump would appear to be pushing hard to pass a “health care” bill just to get a political win. Who cares if 32 million people lose their health care coverage and Medicaid is gutted. Is it the case that the only two Republicans in Congress who have bothered to notice are women as everyone else pretends it isn’t happening? Apparently so.
