Trump Invites Each Member of the Congressional Black Caucus to Second Meeting

“We haven’t made a decision yet,” said Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) on Capitol Hill on June 16. Rep. Richmond was referring to the latest attempt by Donald Trump to meet with the CBC.

The CBC hasn’t had a formal opportunity to discuss a second meeting with Trump. Their weekly Wednesday meeting landed on the same day as the jolting June 14 shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA).  Scalise is a good friend of Richmond, who has visited Scalise and his family at the Washington Hospital Center from Wednesday on.

President Trump invited all 49 members of the Congressional Black Caucus to the White House in a hand delivered letter to each member dated June 9. The invite came via Trump’s Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison Omarosa Manigault.

What issues would be discussed was not detailed, but during their last meeting on March 22nd, everything from HBCUs to Chicago to education was talked about.  Members are divided on how to proceed.  Some in the CBC would like a smaller group to meet with Trump. Others would like to meet with the President.

The first meeting between members of the CBC and President Trump took place on March 22. At that time, seven members of the CBC met with the President and Vice President Pence. They were Chairman Richmond along with Reps. Andre Carson (D-IN), Karen Bass (D-CA), Jim Clyburn (D-SC), Brenda Lawrence (D-MI), Anthony Brown (D-MD) and Gwen Moore (D-WI).

The March 22nd group of CBC members was comprised of the CBC’s executive board and Rep. Clyburn.
