Joy Reid’s show “AM Joy” has exploded to win the largest total viewership in its time period in MSNBC’s history for that time slot. There have been many other shows and personalities that have filled the slot, but AM Joy surpassed all others in total viewers in 2016.
According to MSNBC:
- “AM Joy,” which launched May 7, 2016, delivered MSNBC’s biggest total viewer audience in the time period ever.
- Saturday editions of “AM Joy” delivered the best demo average since 2008; Sunday editions delivered the best demo average since 2003.
- For the year, Saturday editions of “AM Joy” and other 10a-12p programming averaged 631,000 total viewers and 144,000 viewers A25-54. Sunday editions of “AM Joy” and other 10a-12p programming averaged 509,000 total viewers and 131,000 viewers A25-54.
Saturday and Sunday mornings are a notoriously challenging slot on the grid at any network. But it was clear from the first weeks after Reid took over the two hours on Saturday and Sunday that the show was a fan favorite as seen in social media activity and now, by way of hard data.
The show is likely to receive even more viewership as the Trump Administration takes power with a controversial group of cabinet nominees set to take marching orders from a President-Elect with the lowest approval rating ever recorded. But while Trump’s numbers are going down, Reid’s have gone up.
Other shows at MSNBC have smashed records as well. “Morning Joe” and “The Rachel Maddow Show” won their largest total and demo audiences in MSBC’s 20-year history. But those shows are on in much easier slots than the weekend.
Reid took over the weekend slot from former MSNBC host Melissa Harris Perry after Perry departed MSNBC over a dispute over what she viewed as a loss of creative control.
