President Obama to Meet with Family of Alton Sterling


After viewing flood damage in Louisiana, President Obama will meet with the family of Alton Sterling. Sterling, 37, was shot to death by a Baton Rouge Police Officer on July 5, 2016. The encounter Sterling had that ended in his death was captured on video which then gained nationwide attention.

The police officers involved in the shooting of Sterling, Howie Lake II and Blane Salamoni. both been previously been investigated by their department (and cleared) for use of excessive force. Lake previously shot an African-American male.

The President will also meet with the families of officers killed on July 17 by Gavin Long. Long killed three Baton Rouge officers in the wake of Sterling’s shooting.

“Today prior to departure from Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, the President will meet with the family of Alton Sterling as well as the families of deceased and injured officers of the Baton Rouge Police Department and East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office,” according to a White House Official.
