This week Erica Garner, the daughter of the late Eric Garner, the man who was killed by a police chokehold in 2014, has come out in a video supporting Bernie Sanders. Erica Garner is active in the Black Lives Movement.
The video opens with Erica interacting with her daughter who is learning about the civil rights movement, explaining to her child that the movement isn’t over. You can see the full video here:
Garner’s endorsement of Sanders comes at a key time in advance of the South Carolina primary, where African-American voters make up a larger portion of the electorate than they have been in the first two Democratic primaries. This week the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee (not to be confused with the Congressional Black Caucus) endorsed Hillary Clinton, and civil rights icon and Congressman John Lewis raised questions about Sanders’ involvement in the civil rights movement.
