SAFE JUSTICE ACT.  When any bill in Congress has an even amount of Democrats and Republican on it, it’s news — unless it’s the naming of a post office. When it comes to criminal justice reform bills, it’s particularly rare to see 36 co-sponsors that are equally divided.

On July 17, Speaker John Boehner was supportive of the SAFE Justice Act.  The question is: Will the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) get in the way.  At a briefing on Thursday (July 23) one of the sponsors of the SAFE Justice Act, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, mentioned Goodlatte as an obstacle.

“I’ll be really honest to say that Chairman Goodlatte is not on board at this point in time which is one of the reasons that I want to get a good number of cosponsors,” said Sensenbrenner at the briefing as he answered a question from the Daily Caller.  “Because that certainly does not escape that the legislation has a very, very wide and broad support.”

“I think the endorsement of Speaker Boehner on this is to kind of to prod to get this moving in the Judiciary Committee,” Sensenbrenner also said at the briefing.
