Wilson’s War to #TakeBackOurGirls Continues. Last week the President of Nigeria visited Washington. As he did, Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) continued to apply constant pressure and social media attention on the Nigerian government to get them to assist in the release of about 275 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram. Even as the story has faded from headlines, the Florida Congresswoman is pushing the issue.
Wilson urged Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari to confront Boko Haram on the issue. The news of the mass kidnapping broke in April of 2014. Social media was a big factor in getting the story into the mainstream press. Rep. Wilson and her staff continues to use social media to remind everyone of the story. She has also persuaded her congressional colleagues and others on Capitol Hill to wear red every Wednesday and attend a press event she holds that focuses on the kidnappings every Wednesday.
“Until someone can show me a mass grave where all of them are buried, or show me proof that they are gone forever, we will continue to tweet, every day, bring back our girls,” Rep. Wilson said at a press conference last week.
