Despite the condemnation from Latino issue groups and other presidential candidates, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is viewed positively by Republicans.
A Washington Post/ABC News poll released yesterday shows that 57 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of Donald Trump compared to 40 percent who have an unfavorable view. Overall, 61 percent of voters view Trump negatively.
Trump, who widely criticized Mexican immigrants during his announcement speech, has increased his unfavorable rating among Latinos. In May, 60 percent of Latinos viewed Trump negatively; now 81 percent of Latinos view Trump unfavorably.
This data shows that within the Republican Party, candidates who take racist, nativist points of view can still find ample support.
Earlier this week the President of the National Council of La Raza, Janet Murguia, called on Republicans to “stand up to the Trump wing of your party” during a speech that closed out the annual conference for the organization.
