A 30 year old artist and activist, Bree Newsome, climbed the flagpole in front of the South Carolina capitol building this morning and took down the Confederate flag.
According to the Guardian, Bree Newsome, a 30 year old from Charlotte, North Carolina, had climbed halfway up the pole when police demanded that she come down. She continued climbing.
With the flag in her hand, as she started her climb down the pole, Newsome said, “You come against me in the name of hatred, repression, and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today.”
Newsome told the police who were waiting for her at the bottom of the pole, “I’m prepared to be arrested.”

Newsome and another activist, James Ian, were charged with defacing a monument according to a report from WLTX. This misdemeanor charge is punishable by a fine or a maximum jail term of three years.
