Six in 2017? Could it happen that there will be six African Americans sworn-in to the U.S. Senate in January 2017?
(CA) Kamala Harris
(IL) Robin Kelly
(MD) Elijah Cummings/Donna Edwards
(NV) Steve Horsford?
(SC) Sen. Tim Scott
(NJ) Sen. Cory Booker
Of course all the stars would have to be in exactly the right political alignment for this historic marker to take place. There’s no indication that Horsford will run for retiring Senator Harry Reid’s seat… yet.
Additionally, the race in Maryland is all but certain to be tight whether Cummings or Edwards goes up against Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), who is likely to run a very good campaign. If Cummings gets in, Van Hollen would have an advantage because of the obvious vote split of Black voters Cummings + Edwards running simultaneously would cause.
But with only one African American running in MD, an open presidential race and Hillary at the top of 2016 ticket what can happen in general terms may result in an exciting and historic benchmark.
