Rep. Clay not invited to September 15 meeting. Rep. Lacy Clay (D-MO), who represents Ferguson, Missouri, said on Sept. 11th that neither he nor Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) had been invited to a meeting on September 15 in Clay’s district on “next steps” with regard to Ferguson.
Though Clay said the meeting was organized by Missouri senior Senator Claire McCaskill, the Senator indicated later in the afternoon on Thursday that Gov. Jay Nixon was the meeting’s organizer. Either way, the moment indicates that Democrats in Missouri aren’t exactly on the same page as they deal with the complex issues connected to the Ferguson issue.
Reps. Clay and Cleaver have met with Attorney General Holder and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Ferguson. The two even flew from Missouri to Washington with the Attorney General on August 20. On August 21, they met with Hagel.
Scheduled to attend the gathering of top officials are Gov. Nixon, Sen. McCaskill, Missouri Attorney General Chris Coster, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley. This week on Capitol Hill, McCaskill chaired a hearing on militarization of local police departments.
