North Carolina Congressman G. K. Butterfield joined Republican Mayor Adam O’Neal during the final leg of O’Neal’s 300-mile walk from Belhaven, North Carolina to Washington, DC.
The Republican Mayor walked for two weeks in protest of North Carolina’s failure to expand Medicaid.
As a result, a local hospital in Belhaven closed. Rep. Butterfield, who is the co-chair of the new State Medicaid Expansion Caucus in the House, joined O’Neal’s at the end of his walk.
“Mayor O’Neal’s support for Medicaid expansion shows that this is a non-partisan issue. Poor democrats and republicans alike need health insurance. Health care should be a right for all, not a privilege for the few… The state’s refusal to expand is an injustice not only to the 500,000 North Carolinians it affects, but also to the millions of Americans nationwide being denied expansion in their states. I applaud Mayor O’Neal for his courage and activism,” Butterfield said in statement today.
