On Friday, Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez voiced support for President Obama’s request for $3.7 billion supplemental request to handle the humanitarian crisis at the border. This comes just weeks after the Democratic Congressman, who has been one of the fiercest advocates for immigration reform in the House, declared that comprehensive immigration reform is dead for this year.
President Obama’s request would not only be used to improve facilities for the unaccompanied minors, but also to speed up deportations. Gutierrez is not in favor of speeding up deportations as his stated goal is to protect the children. Gutierrez favors keeping a 2008 law on the books that protests children seeking asylum in the U.S. Note how the Congressman explains that Republicans once supported the Bush era asylum law.
