Southern Company, one of the most preeminent electricity companies in the country was recently named to Fortune Magazine’s 2014 “World’s Most Admired Companies” list for the fifth year in the row. Southern Company, with 4.4 million customers and 46,000 megawatts of generating power, serves areas in North Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.
Owner of a generation company, Southern Power, and three nuclear generating plants, Southern Nuclear, Southern Company owns Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power and Mississippi Power. It has also expanded into fiber optics and wireless communications with Southern Telecom and SouthernLINC Wireless.
Southern Company was selected from among 1,400 companies – the Fortune 1,000 list as well as the top grossing companies on Fortune’s Global 500 database. The honorees were then whittled down further from a list of 692 companies from 30 countries. Selection was based on nine criteria, including investment value to social responsibility, and to make the Most Admired list, a company had to score in the top half of its industry. Fortune earns this recognition as one of the top three utilities in the world.
