Always one to insert herself into the political conversation, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin opined about President Obama via her Facebook page on Monday, the federal holiday to commemorate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Happy MLK, Jr. Day!
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mr. President, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all who commit to ending any racial divide, no more playing the race card.”
The ironic thing is that President Obama has explicitly tried to avoid the “race card” in his presidency by distancing himself from issues tied to people of color (incarceration, death penalty, being more proactive about stopping deportations, etc.). President Obama has even been criticized by members of the Congressional Black Caucus for not doing enough to help African American communities.
During his presidency, President Obama has faced tremendous obstruction in terms of dealing with his judicial nominees, the debt ceiling, and legislation to promote jobs. Many have wondered if the obstruction that Obama has dealt with while in office is because he is the first black president.
Essentially, Sarah Palin used the MLK holiday to make a potshot at the President. Asking the President to put aside his blackness for the next three years is pretty ridiculous. As much as Barack Obama tries to be the President for everyone in his rhetoric and with his policies administered by a largely white cabinet, it will never be enough for Palin and her fans.
