Obamacare benefits that take effect Jan. 1

People with pre-existing conditions can breathe a little easier when shopping for health insurance this year as some new Affordable Care Act benefits become effective today.

As of today, health insurance companies cannot deny coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Lifetime caps for essential coverage are now history. Insurers will no longer be able to charge higher prices for people with chronic conditions. And everyone is now under the individual mandate, which means that you must have health coverage or be subject to a tax penalty.
