The new sci fi flick “Elysium” is about a grossly polluted, overcrowded earth, filled with poor mostly brown and black people who are stuck on earth while a small group of affluent white folks live in a beautiful space station called Elysium. Elysium is lush, tranquil, and clean, while earth is grimy and gross. Los Angeles is the location where the earth scenes are shot, where the largely Spanish speaking masses struggle to get by. Earth has basically been reduced to a sprawling urban ghetto.

When the inhabitants of earth seek to enter Elysium, the “Department of Homeland Security” attempts to violently thwart the “illegal aliens.” Given the current immigration debate, it’s uncanny that the film writers decided to use the term “Homeland Security.” A militarized Homeland Security ruthlessly attacks any unauthorized intruder.

The movie implies that when an elite group is isolated from the masses that it can oppress and inflict harm on those who they don’t interact with. Immigration and the theme of the 99% are prominent in the film.
