50 million in poverty. Today, members of the Congressional Black Caucus are leading a protest on the House floor against Republican attempts to remove food stamps from the bill — and cut them by $20 billion. Through procedural motions and delays, members of the Caucus, led by Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) and CBC Chair Marcia Fudge (D-OH), are delaying House action.
As is typical of so many House votes, it is meaningless and would appear to be another “message” vote to the Republican base. The Senate and the President disagree with the plan and the Senate is unlikely to take up the House version of the farm bill.
In the video below, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), who is also a pastot, preaches on the House floor against food stamps cuts in the GOP farm bill. The CBC brought up the issue of poverty this week during a meeting with President Obama.
