What Makes This Person a Game Changer: East Orange, New Jersey Mayor Robert L. Bowser is the president of both the National Conference of Black Mayors as well as the New Jersey League of Municipalities. He also holds the title of being the first African American to be elected to three terms in the city of East Orange. Prior to becoming mayor of his hometown, Bowser worked as Newark Central Planning Board’s Principal City Planner, Montclair’s Traffic Engineer, and President of Bowser Engineers and Associates. He also served on the Newark Board of Education as the School District Principal Engineer in the Design and Construction Department. Bowser is also active in his community. He has served on the the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Greater Essex County, President of the East Orange Kiwanis Club and Chairman of the Rutgers University Urban Gardening Program Advisory Board. He was founder and Executive Director of the Essex County Touch Football League and served as a member of the Brick Church Lions Club, Men of Essex, Inc., and as a Salvation Army Board Member and East Orange General Hospital board of trustee.
