Today the Senate gang of eight publicly made the case for its immigration bill. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), John McCain (R-AZ), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Michael Bennet (D-CO) each spoke.
The overall theme was that the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 is a tough bill that provides an achievable path toward citizenship. The border security measures were described as strong and designed to discourage another wave of illegal immigration. E-verify, the employment verification system, was framed in a way to protect American workers. Senators Menendez and Rubio even delivered portions of their statements in Spanish. Menendez highlighted the work of migrant labor in agriculture and in the service industries, and Rubio highlighted the tough requirements of the bill.
