If anyone can remember a time when a member of Congress focused on the children of a sitting President taking a vacation, e-mail me at LBurke007@gmail.com. One of the persistent episodes that has reoccurred several times during the Obama Presidency are those certain little “issues” that pop up that never were issues before. These endless double standards should not be ignored.
- In January 2012, I wrote The 10 Worst Moments of Disrespect Towards President Obama. It was too easy to write. I didn’t have to dig much to find unprecedented incidents that have only happened to American President #44. From Governors who wagged their finger in his face, to a “reporter” interrupting and yelling at the President as he spoke in the Rose Garden, to bigmouth [read: Joe Wilson] members of Congress yelling “you lie” at the President on national TV, I tabulated incidents we have never see before done to any other President in U.S. history.
With last week’s comments from Rep. Steve King (R-IA) regarding the President’s children vacationing, I may have to revise the list. It started with the never before seen action of a so-called “media organization” masquerading as political entity reporting the exact location of the President’s children. Sit still, close your eyes and imagine the reaction from Hannity and the gang if TPM or ThinkProgress reported exactly where daughters of President George W. Bush’s were vacationing. But somehow when Breitbart simpleton Matt Boyle does it with this President’s children it is now a-OK. Incidentally, Boyle is the same moron and fav of the rightwing entertainment complex who gave us a false story on Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ). Some keep trying to assert that somehow President Obama’s vacations cost more while ignoring that he has fewer of them. Meanwhile, does anyone actually believe flying to and from Crawford, Texas over eight years is free? That Bush also took the longest presidential vacation in history — five weeks — is also somehow forgotten.
Clearly, to a loud obnoxious few, Blacks can’t vacation. When our nation had two wars going on during almost the entire eight years President Bush was in office, no one seemed to notice he was away from the White House for 1,020 days — 32% of his presidency. Now, suddenly, not even President Obama’s children can’t take a break — much less the President himself. That’s a new one. Nevermind that President Bush was most likely the most vacationing President in American history as he spent almost as many days away from the White House than President Kennedy was in office total. If anyone would actually bother to compare President Obama’s vacation time they’d see it’s nowhere near that of his predecessor. But some on the right have made the vacation issue an obsession. Now that obsession includes the President’s children and the first lady. Reagan’s vacations at the Claudette Colbert estate during a recession and Bush’s jaunt’s to Kennebunkport while soldiers were on the battlefield are long forgotten.
Since when have reporters and politicians focused on the President’s children vacationing? Since right now.
CALLER (CARLA): When I see the First Lady and the beautiful girls going off to the Bahamas waving goodbye to us, it’s really hard to stomach. When we’re tightening our belts, either all of us should do it or none of us should do it. This, I am pretty tolerant, I always have been, I usually shut my mouth. This is not acceptable.
REP. STEVE KING: Carla, you’re on point and on the mark all the way through.[…] You’re right on the president. He needs to show some austerity himself. Instead he wanted to tell America how bad it was going to be. […] We’ve got the president doing these things. He sent the daughters to spring break in Mexico a year ago. That was at our expense, too. And now to the Bahamas at one of the most expensive places there. That is the wrong image to be coming out of the White House.
