Though philanthropist George Soros has donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund before — he outdid himself this week. The billionaire investor has given $1 million to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
Between 1979 and 2011, Soros has given over $8 billion to human rights and education related causes.
Soros’ donation is a clear vote of confidence and support to new NAACP Legal Defense Fund Director Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill.
Soros said Ifill is “a leader who can meet the challenges of our times and galvanize others in support of a 21st century civil rights agenda.”
“This generous gift and our board’s match will enable us to maintain the standard of excellence for which LDF is well-known and will help to fuel the next phases of this important civil rights work,” Ifil stated commenting on the gift.
“We need bold and courageous civil rights strategies if we are to achieve racial equality in this country… strategic vision, courage and immense commitment to justice,” Soros said in a statement.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund was founded by Justice Thurgood Marshall who secured the landmark victory in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
