The Catholic Cardinals have elected a new Pope on Wednesday, and the Vatican sent the symbolic signal to the world with the white smoke billowing from the Sistine Chapel. The new Pope is the Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a Cardinal from Argentina from the Jesuit order, who becomes the first pontiff from the Americas.
Many had been hoping that the new Pope would come from Latin America, as a nod to the large Catholic faith throughout the Americas. Bergoglio speaks Spanish, Italian and German. His chosen name as Pope is Frances I. In addition to being the first pontiff from the Americas, Frances I becomes the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church.
