Remember how we arrived at the precipice of the fiscal cliff? The fiscal cliff is a result of House Republicans. We arrived at the fiscal cliff during the debt ceiling fight after House Republican leaders John Boehner and Eric Cantor decided that the Budget Control Act had to pass to force everyone to deal with the nation’s problems. And now here we are.
The right wing of the House insists on no compromise and getting 100% of what they want in these “negotiations.” One outgoing rand-and-file Republican answered a question last night in the Capitol regarding whether Speaker Boehner is to blame. His answer spoke volumes.
“It’s like saying that the superintendent of an insane asylum should be discharged because he couldn’t control the crazy people. That’s nuts,” said Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH).
He went on to say that this moment of fiscal cliff chaos, “Weakens the entire Republican Party, the Republican majority. It’s the continuing dumbing-down of the Republican Party and we are going to be seen more and more as a bunch of extremists that can’t even get a majority of our own people to support policies that we’re putting forward,” LaTourette said.
This morning, Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor held a press conference. Boehner gave no indication of what the way forward is. He also could not confirm when the next set of discussion with the President of congressional Democrats would be.
