But Romneycare is Obamacare. Joe Soptic, a former steelworker at the now defunct GST Steel, was laid off when the plant, owned by Bain Capital, closed. Soptic and his wife lost their heath insurance as a result. His wife later died of undiagnosed cancer three years later. Soptic tells the story is the subject of the latest hard hitting ad from the Obama campaign. Soptic in the commercial:
When Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant I lost my health care, and my family lost their health care. And a short time after that my wife became ill. She passed away in 22 days. I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he’s done to anyone.
Even though Romney has campaigned against the Affordable Care Act and said he will repeal Obamacare on day one of his presidency, Romney’s press secretary Andrea Saul threw conservatives into a tizzy with her endorsement of Romneycare, which is effectively Obamacare, and the individual mandate.
Saul said the following in reaction to the commercial on Fox News: “Obviously, it’s unfortunate when anyone loses their job. This particular case was a plant that was closed years after Gov. Romney left the company. And to that point, you know, if people had been in Massachusetts under Gov. Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care.”
The Romney campaign would appear to be confused on strategy. As Ann Coulter calls for Saul to be fired, ome commentators say she could not have been speaking “off the cuff” and that the endorsement of Romneycare — which Mitt Romney has been downplaying and denying was like Obamacare all through the primaries — was intentional. It will be interesting to see what the campaign’s follow-up is.
