Why Boycotts Won’t Work

ManHoldingCash

After Rush Limbaugh shamelessly called Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute,” several corporations pulled their advertising from his show.

While you think this is going to finally pull him off the airwaves – it won’t.  It will have absolutely no effect. Worse part about it: Rush Limbaugh knows it.  But, many others mistakenly cling to the belief that if they put pressure on the remaining advertisers, no corporation will advertise with him.

If he hasn’t been thrown off air by now, what makes you think he will now? They are going after the wrong target. For one: the corporations being targeted have no editorial control.  They are simply concerned with the return on their advertising investment.  Rush has a lot of listeners and that translates into, presumably, more sales for them.

Potential boycotters must understand that Rush’s show is operated by the Premiere Radio Networks, which itself is a subsidiary of San Antonio-based Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. More importantly, boycotters must understand that Premiere produces a lot of conservative radio because there are millions of listeners who devoutly follow the talking heads like Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

So: you may see advertisers dropping out now.  But, wait till the dust settles and it’s all forgotten.  You’ll see them right back up there.

The odds of convincing Premiere and Clear Channel that Limbaugh is bad for business is – hate to break it to you – remote. It’s all about the audience; and Rush has a certain kind of audience that likes it when he calls a “liberal” loose cannon like Fluke a “slut.”  They get downright jubilant about it, in fact.  Losing a few advertisers will not suffice because corporations routinely shift where their advertising dollars go. And, for media empires like Clear Channel losing six or seven advertisers is small potatoes.

That is not to say a boycott is impossible. After all, who cares about Glenn Beck now that he is off of FOX News? But, odds are, an advertiser boycott will not work. The reason is simple: Rush is different.

His 2008 contract pays him $400 million over 8 years. He makes his corporate bosses really rich, so they will fight tooth and nail before relegating Limbaugh to the wilderness.

Instead, opponents of Rush should work on marginalizing Limbaugh, challenging his many, many fact-less statements he makes on the air. Truth is the best disinfectant. Let the truth be Limbaugh’s downfall.

I agree that hitting Rush's direct advertisers is sort of a waste of time. That's not to say that you can't make Clear Channel / Bain Capital decide that Rush is Too Big of a liability to support. All you have to do is go after Clear Channel Outdoor. Which is to say anybody who has an add on a Billboard with Clear Channel on the bottom of it. If anyone who is disgusted with Rush and his recent comments vis-a-vis Ms Fluke would contact just one company they see tomorrow that has an add on a Clear Channel Billboard and ask why they are associating with /contributing revenue to a company that supports and defends (see attached link) such a misogynistic pervert you could, in fact, get Rush off of Clear Channel in 48 hours. If you can't think of anyone else to e-mail / call etc, there is always Apple Computer Co.

    Just a Thought

It is absolutely NOT a waste of time, Clear channel makes their money from his syndication – hundreds of local stations pay to play – if too many of them are getting dead air like the NY station … then will they keep paying? Will they replace him w/other less misogynistic blowhard – the latter is what many of us will settle for – and we won't stop.
Marginalize him by chasing away sponsors both national and local.
If anyone has a list of local sponsors this site is looking for info to share so that locals will know who to boycott as well as nationals- the site DOESN'T post most comments, is heavily monitored and doesn't feed trolls – especially the dittohead type. They are deleting nasty comments w/out even reading them: http://stopthewaronwomen.wordpress.com/ or boycottrushlimbaughssponsors.com

I totally agree with this. Contact the local advertisers and make it too expensive for the local stations to pay for his program. Local advertisers need people to buy their products regularly and can't afford to lose them. In Wilmington NC, his sponsors are Stevenson Honda 9103951116 (stevensonhonda.com) , Alpha Mortgage 9102568999 (alphamortgage.com), Perry's Emporium (perrysemporium.com) 9103926721. Station is WAAV 980. National company (Honda) also needs to know what local dealer is doing is hurting the brand.

this is the kind of thing that will really create a problem for him – it is just as important to boycott the LOCAL sponsors as it is to boycott national sponsors. It is also important to reward and patronize the companies who boycott him.
post a comment to our website and we will get the information up : boycottrushlimbaughssponsors.com or http://stopthewaronwomen.wordpress.com/ keep us updated and if we get enough local advertisers we will post a data base.

  3. It's not six or seven advertisers gone anymore. Now it's up to forty and climbing.
