“Occupy the Vote” with NUL’s State of Black America 2012

“Occupy the Vote” with NUL’s State of Black America 2012

On March 7th the National Urban League (NUL) will release its annual State of Black America report. For decades Black America – plus those interested in their status and standing – have annually awaited what has become the nation’s touchstone for the social and economic status of citizens of color.

Last year the NUL released the report during a free, open-to-the-public town hall at Howard University. Following the success of last year’s event, the NUL will once again release the report at Howard University’s Cramton Hall. The event starts at 7pm EST, and for those not local to Washington, D.C. it will also be live streamed on  www.iamempowered.com.

The report is being released amidst a nationwide rollback in voting rights, with America’s most vulnerable citizens impacted. Elected officials, on all levels, are hard at work slashing investments in education and economic development. In answer to the state of politics and its affect on minority populations the message in this year’s report is “Occupy The Vote To Educate, Employ and Empower”.

Earlier this year the “Occupy” movement took the nation by storm as people of all colors amassed behind the rally cry: “We are the 99%”. The movement, which began in NYC in early September, rapidly spread to over 95 cities across 82 countries and over 600 communities in the United States. While the protests have waned for the winter, the ideology of righting social and economic inequalities has become rooted in the hearts and minds of many.

The NUL report is timely and the event will provide an opportunity for students, faculty, administrators and community members to engage with national movers and shakers as all discuss the status of Black America and how occupying the vote is of utmost importance this election year.

Recording artist John Legend, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, activist and author Kevin Powell, educator Dr. Steve Perry, and music industry entrepreneur Steve Soute are but a few of those slated to participate in the event.

Doors open at 6pm with DJ Chubb E. Swagg. For more information visit the National Urban League online.
