The Week of Newt Gingrich, the Angry White Guy and Etta James

The Week of Newt Gingrich, the Angry White Guy and Etta James

Politic365 editors and contributors give their take on what they think was the TOP 3-6-5 of the past week:

Three Major Stories of the Past Week

1. The obvious: Newt Gingrich wins the South Carolina primary and upsets a Republican presidential race that prides itself on predictability.

2. The not so obvious: the rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline and the fierce Republican reaction to it (see below for more on this)

3. A movement gets aboard the anti #SOPA and #RIPA and convinces twelve Members of Congress to flip their support for the law that would have enabled the government and artists to pull down foreign companies that sell pirated music, images and movies to Americans.

Six People Who Changed the Week

1. Newt Gingrich – can you argue with that?

2. The Angry White Male – Looks like he won in Iowa, couldn’t touch New Hampshire and reared his ugly scowl in South Carolina.  Watch him ransack a Republican primary near you!

3. Etta James – the legendary R&B soulstress dies at 83.

4. Stephen Cobert – he polled in SC, got Herman Cain to appear with him at an event before 3000 which is quadrupled the number that attended any one rally by all of the GOP candidates, and told that crowd to vote for Herman Cain.

5. Goodluck Jonathan, The President of Nigeria – he’s had to fight the threat of his nation being the first sub Saharan “Arab Spring.” But, will his name help his cause?

6. Juan Williams – post-Gingrich assualt, what/how is he doing on FOX’s The Five?

Five Predictions and Trends to Look Out For

1. If Newt continues his surge into Florida, and Rick Santorum does well, too, Mitt Romney could throw in the towel.

2. Congress keeps raising the debt limit, but fights tooth and nail on extending the payroll tax through the end of the year.

3. Will the decrease in unemployment claims mean that the unemployment rate for Black America will finally come down?

4. Allen West, Jennifer Carroll, and Marco Rubio will be hounded as high-profile minority GOPers to give their prospective (and endorsements) in the FL GOP primary. They won’t: but, will privately put their chips on Newt Gingrich.

5. President Obama’s rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline will prompt Big Oil to enter the 2012 race with a ferocity unmatched by any previous election, boosting Newt Gingrich and potentially tipping the scales against the incumbent.
