Artur Davis Talks Voter ID and Party Switch Rumors
Politic365 Managing Editor Charles D. Ellison recently spoke with former Congressman and one-time gubernatorial candidate Artur Davis (D-AL). Davis spoke exclusively with Politic365 about life after Congress while practicing law and his recent, controversial views on Voter ID laws.
“I was certainly critical of the Georgia Voter ID law. I’ve looked at the issue and what Alabama has done over the past several months. Any Voter ID should make an exception for different circumstances and make identification available free of charge,” says Davis. ”There is a group of individuals out there who don’t have a driver’s license. Those individuals should have a chance to get identification so they have the opportunity to vote. I don’t think a fair Voter ID law is going to disenfranchise any group of people.”
Davis spoke candidly about Black political power in a state like Alabama and his unsuccessful 2010 Democratic primary bid in Alabama. And the former Congressman fended off whispers that he may be considering a party switch and future run for office, particularly in light of his recent change of heart on Voter ID. ”When people say that, they mean it to be some kind of a smear, or some kind of attack. I don’t believe in that kind of politics,” adds Davis. “I don’t have any plans to run for office.”
