Tell ‘Em Why You Mad Herman!
Herman Cain’s fire and brimstone press conference yesterday would have been brilliant – had he done it a week ago. He sounded confident, defiant and – most of all – utterly convinced of his innocence in the face of an increasing array of sexual harassment charges.
Of course he was also foolish, poorly prepared and utterly unconvincing to anyone other than a Herman Cain supporter.
I knew it was over when he said he didn’t even know his most recent accuser Sharon Bialek. Really? Remember what happened the last time a political leader claimed to not know a woman he was linked to in a sex scandal? Furthermore, who are Herman Cain’s speechwriters? Rap Stars, professional athletes and the Hulk can refer to themselves in the third person, but Presidential candidates? Not so much.
Other than the women who (inevitably) will come out to slam him for his chicanery, the person I feel most sorry for right now is Rick Santorum. He’s waking up every morning pissed off that he hasn’t been able to get any of that tasty conservative voter runoff that dripped from Bachman to Perry to Cain and now seems headed towards Newt Gingrich. When are conservative Christian voters going to give him a chance?
Barack Obama and Nicolas Sarkozy: Bad Boys of the G-8
Nicolas, Barack – are we going to have to separate you two again?
It seems like every time President Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy get together they’re causing trouble. Doesn’t Obama know that American presidents are supposed to hate the French? But every time these two get together they’re sniggling and giggling in the back of the summit meetings, dapping each other up, and cheating on Michelle’s diet by grubbing fast food at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
And you know it’s totally Sarkozy who’s the bad influence, the Reggie Mantle to Obama’s Archie Andrews.
A couple of years ago when Sarkozy got distracted by a young lady with quite the ane (that’s French for “Donkey”) it was Obama who got in trouble with the American press. Of course now Sarkozy has gotten Obama in trouble again for whispering in the back of the classroom.
Apparently, the G-8 economic summit reporters overheard Sarkozy telling Obama that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was a liar, difficult to deal with and that he had cooties. Obama cosigned complaining that he had to deal with the Israeli Prime Minister much more often.
As much as the foreign press would like to play this up, this little exchange will not hurt Obama at home, and it certainly isn’t any more embarrassing than George Bush’s aborted back-rub of German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the G-8 summit a few years ago.
However, Obama should learn his lesson about gossiping with Sarkozy: they’re totally Frenemies. Sarkozy is notorious for talking about other world leaders behind their backs. And wasn’t it just a year ago that the French President was telling everyone that Obama was INSANE and didn’t listen to anyone? Maybe Barack needs to find some new kids to sit with at the G-8 cafeteria.
Tonight’s Debate in Detroit
Tonight’s Republican Debate at Oakland University in Detroit is going to be an absolute snooze-fest – unless someone in the GOP field thinks they can make a quick dash at a lead.
Herman Cain’s speedy implosion from the conservative’s Alterna-Mitt to pervy old man status has left perhaps the last gap in the Republican campaign field before the eventual coronation of Mitt Romney.
Analytically, there is still time for someone else to effectively challenge Mitt Romney with almost 60 days before the start of the primaries but the field is running out of alternatives. Every candidate, including Newt Gingrich, has had an electoral surge in the polls except for Rick Santorum (and I guess Huntsman, but he never really counted anyway). If the former Senator from Pennsylvania is going to make a move it has to be tonight.
Everyone else in the campaign field seems resigned to their fate. That’s one of the reasons why no one has stepped in to really pile on to Herman during his sexual harassment scandal. Once his 9-9-9 plan was effectively debunked in the last economic debate everyone saw he didn’t have another trick up his sleeve and the Black Steve Forbes became a side show again, albeit one who was polling better.
So Cain is out; Bachnmann peaked in the summer and has faltered ever since; Rick Perry is doing his best Jerry Jones impression, thinking he can win a championship if he spends enough money hiring people; and Newt Gingrich has always been more interested in selling books and giving speeches than actually running. Rick Santorum is a true conservative, with federal experience. If he can’t make a push tonight it’s time for him to head home.
