GOP presidential candidates Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich have been toying with my emotions lately.

The two men are participating in a debate matchup on Saturday, November 5 in The Woodlands, Texas. This is a fundraiser for The Woodlands Tea Party PAC. Tickets start at $200 each and range up to $1,000.

Student tickets are “only” $150, but they are sold out according to the event website.

Yes. This is the same Newton Leroy Gingrich and Herman Cain that have earned your side-eyes from the 1,834 debates that have aired in the past two months. Cain’s star has been rising, but Gingrich is still stuck firmly on the political D-list in this campaign.

So, please tell me why any debate with these two would be charging a $200 base price for entry? Is the resurrected Michael Jackson performing at intermission?

  1. Yes prices are high, but, please do realize that these Tickets that are indeed between $200 and $1000, are not going to be for a Tea Party; it is a serious intellectual debate, with limited attendance, and in the same time a fundraiser for the Tea Party group who is setting it up (Texas Tea Party PAC). This same group had Herman Cain, Steve King, Joe the Plumber and many others, just six months ago, in the Woodlands, at the Tax Day Tea Party where tickets were starting at $10.
Costs are obviously high to set such an event, and clearly the goal of our PAC is to raise money, and a lot of it, to be able to fulfill our mission, promote and defend our values, and bring our candidates to victory in 2012 … and beyond.
There will be more of both: Tea Party Type of events, to reach large number of citizens, and Debate type, to promote real enriching exchange of ideas.
Do note also that this event will be retransmitted for fre, live, on C-Span and many radios, and then accessible through their archives: http://texasteapartypac.ning.com/profiles/blogs/h

  3. What a joke. A completely inexperienced candidate who wants to leave everything to his advisors (think czars) and grow Federal Powers with a new National Sales Tax. Appearing with a longstanding ESTABLISHMENT Republican at a "TEA PARTY" debate? Will the real tea party please stand up? I could be wrong, but this was probably nothing more than a fundraiser and in no way promoted the core values that ignited the modern tea party movement. "Anybody but Obama" is not acceptable to those who are equally fed up with the Progressives in BOTH parties. I am beginning to wonder if these tea party leaders are now being lured into trying to impress their established republican groups for a seat at the big table someday.
