Casey Anthony’s Attorney Joins High Profile Team in Aruba Murder Case

The recent law school graduate who successfully defended Casey Anthony on charges she killed her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, has confirmed he is representing the man accused of murdering a friend while vacationing in Aruba.

Jose Baez told the Associated Press via text message Tuesday that he was hired to join the team defending Gary Giordano of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Giordano traveled to Aruba with his friend, Robyn Gardner, and told authorities there she disappeared while snorkeling.  Gardner is believed to be dead, though her body has not been recovered.

Police in Aruba, a Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela, revealed few details on their investigation but said that Giordano made inconsistent statements regarding Gardner’s disappearance and noted that he took out a $1.5 million life insurance policy on the woman before the trip. Police say Giordano was the sole beneficiary of that policy.

Baez will join Giordano’s Aruba attorney, Michael Lopez. Baez is famous as the lead attorney in the Florida trial in which the jury acquitted Anthony of murder but found her guilty of misleading police.

Though not a seasoned attorney before the widely watched Florida case, Baez apparently was tapped to join the Aruba defense team because of his success in the Anthony trial.
