Hackers took control of a Twitter feed at Fox News on early Monday and began posting outrageous claims that President Barack Obama had been shot and killed.
The Twitter messages began at 2 a.m. EDT, saying the president had been shot while in Iowa (in fact, Obama spent Independence Day at the White House, where he held a barbecue with military families).
Who was behind the hack attack was not known. A hackers group claimed responsibility, according to some reports, but there was no way to verify that claim.
Now, the U.S. Secret Service says it will look into the hacking of the Fox News account.
“We are investigating and will be conducting the appropriate follow-up,” Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie told the Washington Post.
So will Fox News.
“We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,” said Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital, in a post on the Fox News site.
