Clevelanders Show Their Confidence In Rep. Marcia Fudge’s Leadership Skills
To say that Rep. Marcia Fudge is hard-working and committed is an understatement. In her career, she has advanced from one leadership position to another in the Cleveland area. Her career would eventually allow her to win her first campaign for public office when she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in her area in 2008.
In Congress, Rep. Fudge serves on both the Agriculture Committee and the Science, Space and Technology Committee. She has committed her work to fighting childhood obesity and encouraging science education and development for her northeast Ohio district. Fudge also tackles economic, housing, business, and health care concerns for her constituents. She is well-respected as someone who understands the Cleveland area and its unique needs and circumstances.
A tragic turn of events with her friend and House predecessor, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, thrust Fudge into the initial race for her seat in office. Jones passed away unexpectedly from a cerebral hemorrhage in August 2008. The Democratic Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland called for a special election in Ohio’s 11th Congressional district that year to find Jones’s successor. A group of Democratic leaders nominated Fudge to the ballot. She won that election with 85% of the vote. In late 2010, she was re-elected to office for her second term in the House.
Prior to joining the House of Representatives, Rep. Fudge was the mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio, an inner-ring suburb in the Cleveland area. She became the first female and the first African-American overall to lead the city, and held that office for over eight years.
Before assuming the lead role in Warrensville Heights, Fudge was the chief of staff for Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones during her first term in office. She also worked in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, serving in both legal and business capacities.
Politics has not been Fudge’s only area of service. From 1996-2000 she served as the national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an historic service organization dedicated to African-American women. She was on the board of the Cleveland Public Library. Fudge is a member of Zion Chapel Baptist Church.
Rep. Fudge earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from The Ohio State University. She received her law degree from Cleveland State University.
