Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak Meets Abrupt End to 30-Year Reign

After weeks of vibrant, and at times violent, protests consumed Tahrir Square, Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman today announced the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

According to Suleiman, Mubarak is “transferring authority [over Egypt] to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces ‘to run the affairs of the country.’”

Mubarak’s resignation ends his three-decade regime.  As CNN reports, the crowd in Tahrir Square erupted into celebration at the announcement.

President Obama, who learned of Mubarak’s intended resignation earlier this morning, is expected to make a statement on the events in Egypt later this afternoon.
