President Obama began the day with a weekly address geared toward commemorating Thanksgiving – a time to be grateful for all that we have and have accomplished, and a time to reflect on just how grateful we should be.

“Today, like millions of other families across America,” he said, “Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will sit down to share a Thanksgiving filled with family and friends – and a few helpings of food and football, too.  And just as folks have done in every Thanksgiving since the first, we’ll spend some time taking stock of what we’re thankful for: the God-given bounty of America, and the blessings of one another.”

Obama notes that today “captures that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves.”  And after citing examples of people serving in soup kitchens and looking beyond their personal needs to help others, he says that the Thanksgiving spirit is “emblematic of what Americans have always done.  We come together and do what’s required to make tomorrow better than today.  That’s who we are.”

Today’s message was both a call to action and a charge of encouragement, with President Obama asking Americans to look beyond present circumstances to believe in our potential as citizens of this great nation to overcome, recover and persevere.

Democratic Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC), mindful of how meaningful this Thanksgiving is, took time to recognize the significance of the day.  “Too often we are so consumed with the day-to-day aspects of our lives,” he said, “that we lose sight of what is truly important and take for granted the things for which we should be thankful.”

“This Thanksgiving we should all take a few moments to reflect on all the blessings in our lives, and it is my hope and prayer that all Americans find some way to give back to our communities and remember the men and women whose service to our nation is keeping them away from home and families.  I wish all Americans a very happy season of Thanksgiving.”
