President Obama stretched out his 49th birthday celebration with a game of hoops and a barbecue with friends and First Lady Michelle and daughter, Sasha.
For two hours, the president played a game of basketball at Fort McNair in front of an audience of “wounded warriors” or soldiers injured in action, and participants in the White House’s mentoring program. Friend from law school and Hollywood actor, Hill Harper joined basketball superstars past and present to entertain the troops.
Some of the players in attendance were Chicago Bulls players Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose; Alonzo Mourning, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Bill Russell, Magic Johnson, Grant Hill and Kobe Bryant (he didn’t play). The lone woman in the bunch was college hoop star Maya Moore of the Connecticut Huskies women’s team.
Media were shut out of the event. No score has been reported or who was on the President’s team.
The Associated Press reported,
After the game some of the players joined Obama and a group of his friends for a barbecue at the White House, capping the president’s 49th birthday week.
A small tent and tables decorated with sunflowers and yellow and white tablecloths were being set up on the South Lawn when Obama returned from playing basketball. The White House said the meal will include shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico.
First lady Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha returned to the White House on Sunday night after a vacation in Spain. The Obamas’ older daughter, Malia, is away at summer camp.
Sports and friendship was the dominant theme of President Obama’s birthday week. He also played four hours of golf on Saturday.
