Five Candidates in Democratic Primary for Prince George’s County Exec

When an elected official decides not to run for re-election, the field is left wide open for others to step up for the job.

That well-known scenario is present in the Prince George’s County Executive race after the exodus of Jack Johnson, who is returning to the private sector after his eight-year stint in the post.

Five Democratic candidates are in the running to succeed Johnson and reportedly all tout their experience, NBC reports, in various media, including their Web sites, Facebook and Twitter. No Republicans have filed to run.

Rushern Baker said that because of  his legislative experience, he knows “exactly where all the money is and how to get it back to Prince George’s County.”

Sheriff Michael Jackson said his innovative skills will help him do the job while council member Samuel Dean says his life of service makes him the best person for the post.

Garron Levi, who is currently in the Maryland House of Delegates, has a 10-step plan for the county and says her work cutting the budget in Annapolis can be put to use for county executive.

Political novice Henry Turner Jr. is the only candidate that has never held an office. His goal is to “change the image of Prince George’s County.”

I appreciate the story, but the lead sentence wasn't quite right since we have term limits and the incumbent couldn't run again.

Thanks for pointing that out, Joyce and for visiting the site. You've prompted an amendment: Whether folks decide not to run again or they're not allowed because they're term-limited, it leaves the arena wide open for newcomers. *insert smile here*
