Three Milwaukee siblings were located safe Monday afternoon and their mother was taken into police custody after an Amber Alert was issued for the children hours earlier.
The alert had been issued for Javious, Jaleiah and Katera Thicklen, who had disappeared with their mother, 34-year-old Lavatta Smith, after a fire started in the garage of the family’s home in Milwaukee Sunday.
Javious, 9; his sister, Jaleiah, 7; and Katera, 4 were reportedly found unharmed.
The Cincinnati Examiner stated “an alert driver who heard the Amber Alert called police when he noticed the car was in front of him. Police responded and Smith and her children were pulled over on I-94 just North of Hwy. K in Kenosha just after 4:30 p.m.”
Authorities became concerned when they discovered the family’s home was uninhabitable and had no food or clothing in the house.
The mother’s family said Smith was recently committed to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and has had mental issues in the past.
