Obama Going Back to Oil-Soaked Coast for Third Visit

President Barack Obama told CNN’s Larry King he is “furious” over the largest oil spill in history at the hands of oil giant BP as he prepared to make his third visit to the coast Friday.

A BP well explosion on April 20 killed 11 people and after the rig sank, an estimated 798,000 gallons of oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico.  Late Thursday, CNN reported that officials capped the well, but that oil and gas continued to spew as engineers adjusted it.

Obama told King that while BP has felt his anger, he had not seen the rapid response that he had hoped for.

The president added:

“And the one thing that I think is important to underscore is that I would love to just spend a lot of my time venting and yelling at people. But that’s not the job I was hired to do. My job is to solve this problem and ultimately this isn’t about me and how angry I am. Ultimately this is about the people down in the Gulf who are being impacted and what am I doing to make sure that they’re able to salvage their way of life. And that’s going to be the main focus that I’ve got in the weeks and months ahead.”

Meanwhile, the White House reportedly sent BP a preliminary cleanup bill for $69 million, which the L.A. Times notes is a small portion of the estimated $1 billion cost for response to the slick so far.
