Kilpatrick Ex-Aide Dropped from Stripper Death Lawsuit, Kilpatrick Remains
Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and the city remain defendants in the lawsuit brought by slain stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene’s family, but his ex-lover and aide Christine Beatty and others have been dismissed.
An attorney for the family said the case, which is scheduled for trial in January, is “losing some defendants and gaining some traction” and it will be easier to schedule depositions with fewer attorneys involved.
Seven other defendants have been dismissed, including former Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and Kilpatrick’s wife, Carlita.
Greene was rumored to have been a dancer at a private party at the mayor’s mansion in 2002. She was shot to death in 2003. The lawsuit brought in 2005 by the family alleges officials obstructed investigation into the killing for political reasons, an allegation the city denies. The suit seeks damages of $150 million.
Kilpatrick was sentenced to 18 months in prison last week for failing to pay the city $1 million in restitution and misleading the court about his finances. Kilpatrick was convicted of lying under oath while trying to cover up an affair with Beatty, his former chief of staff.
